I last wrote about resilience in a blog post back in 2014. Wow! Almost 5 years ago. But, I felt the time was right to take up this important topic again.

As I have interviewed over 20 successful inventors for the Inventors Helping Inventors podcast this year, they all have one trait abundantly in common: resilience.

Aaron Krause took his Scrub Daddy sponges – to clean greasy hands – to a variety of retail store buyers – interest was lackadaisical at best. He threw the sponges into a bin for 5 years, but never gave up on the product. Later, it enjoyed a rebirth as sponges for cleaning in the kitchen. Soon it was selling on QVC, then a huge hit on Shark Tank.

Now Scrub Daddy has sold over $170 million in the marketplace. Aaron achieved success because he was ceaselessly resilient.

More Stories of Resilience

Jared and Karina Rabin, inventors of the Hang-O-Matic tool for perfectly aligning and hanging pictures faced a few challenges along the way. Finally, after a great deal of patience, persistence, and perseverance (I have written about the 3 P's before also), they secured POs from two large retailers for their product.

But, they lacked the capital to fulfill the large PO's. No problem: they approached their bank for a loan and received a rejection. Same story with several other banks. They could have simply given up and decided it just wasn't in the cards for them. That's what many inventors do. What did they do?

They sold their house and cashed in their IRA's to fund the PO's. You can hear all the details in Inventors Helping Inventors podcast, episode #3.

They believed in their product and were resilient. Today, the Hang-O-Matic sells in retail stores across America – it is a successful project.

I spent 5 years pitching my slim wallets to DRTV (direct TV or infomercial companies) before Allstar Products licensed it as the Wonder Wallet and sold over $30 million in the marketplace. They had turned me down at least 3 times during that time. I was resilient.

Bobby Edwards and his mom would often cry after attending a major trade show as buyers and contacts laughed at or derided them for the their product, the Squatty Potty. But, they never gave up. Listen to all the details in episode # 15 of Inventors Helping Inventors.

They persisted and found another way to position it – humor. It worked. Today the Squatty Potty sells all over the world and is a huge success story. They were resilient.

Are You Resilient?

Here is my question for you. As a good judge would say: the evidence is in, what sayeth thou?

What is your approach towards resilience? When you hit a barrier or encounter a discouraging setback, what do you do?

Do you look for the next bright shiny object (as do many inventors), or do you sharpen your pencil and go back to the drawing board (okay, enough clichés)?

There is anecdotal evidence that less than 5% of inventors ever make a profit from their inventions. It can't be true that 95% of inventions are simply flawed ideas or concepts – there has got to be some gems there among the stones (oops clichés again!). I think a key reason is simply that the majority of inventors just give up in disgust after many setbacks. What if Aaron Krause had simply left his sponges in that bin and never picked them up again?

Isn't it time for you to get your invention “out of the bin” and give it another try – or ten?

Stay tuned!
