Have you racked your brain trying to come up with your next – or first – hit invention?

Sure you have. Every inventor does.

Of course, there is no formula for finding hit inventions or nearly every really smart person would be wealthy.

But, here is your challenge. Let me read your mind for just a minute with a three questions.

  1. Are you a person who really loves to dive into details in learning anything new?
  2. With your inventions, do you tend to favor adding ‘bells and whistle' features?
  3. Do you like to spend hours considering small changes to your invention?

How many of the above did you answer “yes” to? I'll confess, I would answer yes to all three of them and I bet you would too.

Here's the problem – you're looking in the wrong place to find the keys to a hit invention. Really!

You must focus upon what motivates people to take action: like buying something. How? Read on for the details.

A little human psychology goes a long way…

Have you ever had a car salesman tell you, “you look great in that car!” Or perhaps, “I bet your next date will be impressed when you drive up in this car!” Why do some salesmen insist on using such cheesy sales tactics?

Because they work!

I'll bet you pride yourself on logically weighing the facts and stats before you make a major purchase decision. Right?

But, every buy decision is always driven by emotion, not logic. Psychologically, our brains are wired to move toward perceived pleasure – even instant gratification – and away from pain. It's the very reason you skipped going to the gym, but found the time to buy that latte at Starbucks.

So, thinking now of human psychology, lets look at three keys to hit inventions.

Key #1: We Love to Save Time

All of us love to same time – or to at least think we are saving time.

So, products and services that are proven to save people time are easy to sell.

Think about the ubiquitous drive through windows at fast food restaurants. They didn't exist before 1948, but now they are everywhere – restaurants, banks, pharmacies, even veterinary clinics. Not having to park your car, go into the restaurant, place your order, then return to your car could save you 3 – 5 minutes, right? Unless you are 5th in line in the drive through queue…

Why is Uber a hit with consumers?

Is it because we love getting into a car with a stranger? No. It is because we hate waiting 15 – 45 minutes for a taxi to pick us up.

I have never waited more than 5 minutes for an Uber ride. Also, the Uber driver will happily pick me up from wherever I happen to be – that's convenient. Convenience is simply another form of saving time.

Do you have a product that is easier or more convenient to use for consumers than competitive products? You could have a hit product on your hands. In fact, people will often pay more for convenience.

Key #2: We Love to Save Money

Don't you love to save money? Of course you do. You feel clever when you have landed a “good deal” – or at least thought you did.

What matters most is that you must perceive that you have saved money. J.C. Penney almost went out of business when they offered “fair and square” pricing and eliminated discounts, sales, and coupon pricing. People simply love to buy for “30% off” – often without realizing it is not a discount price at all.

But, here is why it matters very much to you as an inventor.

No matter how great your product is, even convenient, consumers will pass it by if it is not cheaper than the name brand they usually buy. I've had many inventors exhort that consumers would happily pay 10% more for their product because it is so much better than the competition. Good luck with that. There is a reason so many As Seen on TV products sell for $19.95.

Does your invention truly save buyers money compared with the competition? Think of the Ronco Pocket Fisherman, one of the biggest selling TV products ever. It was certainly more convenient to carry than a conventional rod and reel, which often didn't fit well in cars with limited space. Also, it was cheaper.

Is your product a bit cheaper than the market leader? Is it more convenient to use (time saving too)? If so, you have two hits on your hand!

Key #3: We Love to Be Entertained

Toys are always big sellers in the marketplace for one simple reason: they entertain. In fact, our fascination with being entertained often trumps the other two keys to invention success: saving time and money.

Have you ever thrown a Frisbee or played with a Slinky?

These are perennial favorites that have sold well for over 50 years (very rare for toy items). The Fidget Spinner also was a huge hit – for about 6 months! Products that are entertaining and low-priced can be huge in the marketplace, like my friend Josh Malone's invention Bunch O Balloons. Bunch O Balloons have racked up over $300 million in retail sales in just over 3 years.

We love to be entertained in large part because our brains are wired for instant gratification as I described above.

The reality is that many, if not most, consumer products are not particularly entertaining – they are utilitarian. But, if you have an invention that has an entertaining aspect, that could be a big plus.

So, the 3 keys to invention success are: saving time; saving money; or providing entertainment.

Stay tuned.
